First, I was reminded about how excited I am generally about this series when I saw the ad for the upcoming annual and squealed. The new Batman! Cool!
Although it's not perfect, this issue is a return to the form. After the seemingly endless exposition of the last two issues, we finally get some action, with Dr. Fate bringing the fight to Wotan. We also get Flash and Green Lantern running interference, something that seemingly inspires Alan to start seeing them as a team, given his comments at the end of the issue. I thought the revelation that the "green energy" can compel Alan to do something against his will was interesting, though I wonder why it took Dr. Fate's vision to alert them to the presence of Steppenwolf in Dherain and not the green energy. Robinson is going to have to be careful, because I feel like it's the sort of plot device that can get maddening when used intermittently.
Speaking of "maddening," I will say that Robinson still has some moments of wooden dialogue here, such as Alan declaring, "It's maddening!" to Kendra as he's compelled to depart or Kendra basically exulting in Alan's lover's death because she loves a mystery. I think Robinson is generally focused on the world-building that he continues to do here in spectacular fashion, but a little more attention to making the dialogue seem more natural would be a great evolution.
But, overall, I really enjoyed this issue, particularly since it moves us closer and closer to the formation of the Justice Society. After the Tower of Fate interlude, it's nice to be returning to stories that continue to develop the characters and their relationships to one another.
