Nightcrawler has returned to the land of the living! He paid the price of his soul to save the afterlife (and its billions of souls) from his father. Heroic!
This issue is fun, but I'll say that I'm still not 100 percent sure what happened when it comes to Nightcrawler. It appears that the bamfs morphed to form a new body for him, so Nightcrawler is now essentially an enormous maggot (since the bamfs were maggots before he turned them into bamfs). I (sort of) get that part. But, how do the bamfs benefit from his soul? At first, I thought he lost his soul because he was no longer able to return to Heaven, the price of using his blood magic to trap his father and him on Earth. That part, I got (or would get, if it were true). But, it seems to be more specifically tied to his "deal" with the bamfs. Did he originally make the deal, turning them from maggots to bamfs, because he anticipated needing a new body on Earth? I'd buy that, truthfully, since, as he says to Logan, he spent his time in Heaven wanting one more adventure on Earth. Aaron doesn't explicitly say it, but it would make sense. But, again, why would the bamfs need his soul as payment? Weren't they better as bamfs than maggots? That part is unclear to me, though hopefully Aaron will elaborate further. (Plus, as we've seen with Magik, lost souls often can be found.)
In the meantime, it's nice to have Nightcrawler back. He'd been dead four years, a respectable amount of time in comics. Given the state of affairs in the X-family, we could use some comic relief and the X-Men could use some spiritual guidance.
*** (three of five stars)
