Six-Month-Old Comics: The Top-Shelf September 22 and 29 (2021) "War of the Bounty Hunters" Edition (HERE BE SPOILERS!)

Star Wars:  Bounty Hunters #16 (September 22):  I wasn't going to recap this issue, since it mostly rehashes what we've seen in other issues of this event.  But, man, the end really kicks it up a notch.

After Valance abandoned Dengar in "Star Wars:  War of the Bounty Hunters" #4, Deathstick saves him.  It turns out Qi'ra had her spare him and Valance in issue #14 because she knew that they had Cadeliah's location.  Dengar gives Deathstick the Rebel base's coordinates, which he downloaded after Valance sent Kondra a transmission.  In said message, Valance tells Kondra that he was pretty sure that he wasn't going to make it through the fight with Crimson Dawn alive and asked him to take care of Cadeliah and Yura.  This development sets up an eventual fight over Cadeliah between Deathstick and T'onga and her crew.  Meanwhile, Boba Fett and Valance continue to chase after Han Solo.

In other words, this series is really meeting its title's mission as it isn't just Valance's show.  That said, I'm pretty broken over the end of Dengar and Valance's partnership.  As Boba Fett correctly told Valance, sure, Dengar planned on betraying him, too.  But, it still feels like two guys who could maybe use a little companionship and trust lost the chance for that here, in a pretty lonely galaxy far, far away.

Star Wars #17 (September 29):  This issue is all about Lando as he risks his life to fix the Falcon.  Reflecting on how he failed the Falcon like he's failed other people, Lando asks her to avoid firing her reactor burn long enough for him to fix her diagnostic circuits (which are, unfortunately, in the same place).  (Boba Fett's seismic charge from "Star Wars:  War of the Bounty Hunters" #4 knocked it loose.)  When she does, Lando rises a changed man, realizing that it's time for him to start taking care of the people (and ships) who care about him.  Later, as Chewie uses the revived diagnostic system to fix the Falcon, Leia tells Lando that she appreciates the sacrifice that he was willing to make and makes another pitch for him to join the Rebellion.  This time, it doesn't fall on deaf ears.
